There are no hard and fast “rules” for business blogging, but there are several elements that will make your blog reader-friendly and more successful.

#1:  The Master Plan

Creating content – Understanding why you are in business, what your business does for your clients and your goals for your business will guide you in creating content.

Keyword Research – Keywords and keyword phrases are a major part of your blog content.  Compile a list of keywords that are relevant and use the Google Keyword tool to research how many actual searches are done each month.  Use this list as a starting point.

Define Your Target Audience – Write about what your audience will find interesting, informative and helpful.

#2:  The Blog Content

Your content should be reliable and consistent.  Write as if you are speaking to a person and not delivering a lecture.  Engage your audience with content that will solve problems, educate them on your business, and entertain them with bits of trivia relevant to their businesses.

Publish on a schedule, but don’t publish junk just to stay on schedule.  Set a reasonable publishing goal you can maintain.

Make Your Content Scannable – People read a web page differently than the printed page.  Break up your content with bullets, headers and shorter paragraphs.  Make it easy for your readers to absorb the content without having to read the complete article.

#3:  Marketing Your Blog

Put in the time to market your blog.  In order to create a following/readership, people need to find your blog.  Make sure your blog posts are linked to your social profiles.  Post on Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin and hotlink back to your website.  This creates a stream of potential customers for your business.

Schedule some time to focus on your blog marketing content.  30 minutes just 2 or 3 days a week is a good start.  During this time you can read other blogs in your industry and leave comments, which create visibility and exposure for you as well as drive traffic back to your own blog.  Create a list of topics that will interest your audience.  Make 5 to 10 subtopics under each category.  With only 10 topics with 5 subtopics each, you have 50 blog posts to pull from.

Post these on your editorial calendar and you will not be facing a blank page, with no ideas when it is time to write your blog.

Make a list of blog topics from books, articles or blogs you read, or conversations you have.  These may not be your first choice for your blog, but if you are stuck and need content, pull from this list of ideas.

Write more than one blog at a time and queue them up over the next few weeks.  This works especially well if your time is at a premium.  Take an hour and grab you laptop and crank out a few blogs.

Use all your resources, including all the people in your organization.  The more people you have contributing content, the broader your blog posts will be and the broader audience they will attract.  Encourage everyone to write a blog for your company, utilize the creativity that is probably abundant in your company.

Managing a Corporate Blog requires understanding the differences between blog types. Corporate blogging is now the niche when it comes to marketing your website. A successful Corporate blog will incorporate the following;

1. Knowledge of your topic

You have to have a solid knowledge and background of your blog. Not only put rich content and keywords, but also you must harmonize the data that you put in it. Try not to create blogs that lead to useless or out of the normal topics, you must also have resources and evidence for you to present the topic at a much deeper and richer content.

2. Focus on your target audience

Choose who your target audiences are. Focusing on a certain market rather than the general public can get you more solid leads as opposed to several irrelevant ones. Pick out topics that are suitable for your target market that will really entice their interest.

3. Moderate comments

Not all comments are suitable for public viewing, and not all blogs are suitable to have comments in it. Consider the topic of your blogs, and be prepared to moderate comments. You may also want to include the pros and cons in your blog topic, as this will give a more realistic and personal feel to the topic.

4. Don’t treat corporate blogs as a personal blog

Remember your objective is to gain leads and customers, rather than blurting about how you personally feel. Be professional and always remember that you are carrying the brand of your website.
